Job summary

The Open-Door Program at Tidewater Community College seeks an Education Support Specialist I to provide tutoring in English, Writing and Research, and to support students in developing independent learning strategies.

Hours are 10–18 per week, Mon–Fri, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. with occasional evenings/weekends. Candidates should have 60 credits with a B average and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a “B” average or better in the content area or related subject area.
• The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
• Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
• English/Writing/Research tutors should be proficient in research methods, APA and MLA citations, and standard undergraduate communications including but not limited to all major arguments, grammar, and public speaking.
• Proficient in basic computer usage (Microsoft Office, GoogleDocs, Zoom).

Responsibilities

• Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
• Participate in professional development offerings.
• Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students.
• Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
• Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms.
• Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support.
• Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.
