Tidewater Community College invites applications for a part-time Professional English Tutor for the Open Door Program at Portsmouth. The tutor provides individual tutoring in English, Writing and Research, supports information technology tools, and helps students develop independent study skills.

The role requires at least 60 college credits with a B average, strong written and oral communication, and the ability to work with a diverse student population.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a “B” average in the content area.
• The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods to meet various learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
• Proficiency in APA and MLA citations and standard undergraduate communications including grammar and public speaking.
• Proficient in basic computer usage (Microsoft Office, GoogleDocs, Zoom).

Responsibilities

• Tutor students in English, Writing and Research and encourage a systemic approach to studying.
• Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan academic support for students.
• Refer students to campus resources and maintain records of tutoring sessions.
• Reach out to program students and encourage attendance for academic support; perform other duties as needed.
