Job summary

Fort Wayne Community Schools Special Education is seeking a 6.5-hour Deaf & Hard of Hearing Interpreter at Snider High School to provide voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting and related support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Starting date is immediate.

The role requires EIPA 3.5 or RID certification, SEE/ASL proficiency, and experience with students with special needs, plus 36 PGP points every 2 years.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to interpret using Signing Exact English (SEE)/ American Sign Language (ASL) method (receptive and expressive).
• Possess an Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment (EIPA). EIPA must be a minimum score of 3.5 and/or certification by RID, Inc.
• Prefer candidate with previous experience working with students with special needs.
• Must participate in training to earn a minimum of 36 Professional Growth Points (PGP) every 2 years.
• Alternative Functional Programs applicants must pass level 1 of the FWCS Sign Language Assessment.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and transliterate for Deaf/HH students to reinforce and follow instructional concepts in various subjects.
• Provide interpretation to facilitate communications among students, faculty, staff, parents and others; use appropriate language register and ensure understanding of directions.
• Provide expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration for classroom activities, meetings, and events.
• Assist teachers with instructional activities for individuals or small groups of students.
• Perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities (typing, duplicating, filing).
• Provide behavioral supports for students and monitor progress.
• Interpret questions, responses, and other communications between students, staff and others.
• Escort students to buses, classes and other locations; assist with mobility and safety as needed.
• Assist students with completing assignments and handling educational materials.
• Confer with students, teachers and administrators about progress and IEP-related issues; participate in IEP process as assigned.
• Participate in annual Sign Language Assessment and required trainings.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator.
