Meals on Wheels People
The vision of Meals on Wheels People is that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation. The Diner provides an opportunity for older adults to enjoy nutritious, affordable or donated meals in an atmosphere that is also appealing to families and people of every age and generation. This nonprofit restaurant also serves as a training facility, providing relevant guidance and experience for aspiring food service workers. The Diner serves delicious, local and fresh, made-from-scratch comfort food, and strives to bring a wonderful experience to the community. The Diner is open Wednesday-Sunday for breakfast and lunch from 8 am-3 pm in Vancouver, WA.

Job Overview

The Cook is responsible for preparing and/or directing the preparation of food, ensuring compliance with sanitation, health, and hygiene standards. The role involves planning food production to align with meal service times, monitoring supplies and equipment to minimize waste, and mentoring program participants in food preparation and sanitation tasks.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Prepare ingredients for cooking (chopping vegetables, cutting meat, etc.)
  2. Cook menu items in cooperation with kitchen staff
  3. Ensure dishes are well-presented before serving
  4. Maintain compliance with sanitation and safety regulations
  5. Store food properly and manage inventory
  6. Set up and break down workstations
  7. Report equipment issues to the Kitchen Manager
  8. Follow recipes and maintain production records
  9. Maintain professionalism with coworkers and customers
  10. Work overtime if required
  11. Support the mission and goals of Meals on Wheels People
  12. Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Culinary Arts certification preferred
  • Knowledge of cooking procedures and methods
  • Current Food Handler’s card or ability to obtain one
  • ServSafe certification or ability to obtain within 18 months
  • Knowledge of food sanitation standards
Skills and Experience
  • At least one year of food service cooking experience
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Customer service skills
  • Experience with diverse populations
  • Good communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform repetitive lifting of 20-30 lbs
  • Passion for serving seniors
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Fast-paced kitchen environment, significant people interaction, ability to lift 50 lbs, frequent reaching, bending, and use of kitchen equipment. Must pass background checks.

Employment Details

This is an at-will employment position. Benefits include medical, dental, 401(k), and paid time off, with eligibility based on hours worked and tenure.
