Job summary

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a Part-Time ASL Interpreter to provide high-quality interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and university activities. The role follows RID Code of Professional Conduct, interpreting in classrooms, labs, advising, tutoring, and events.

Essential qualifications include NJ Educational Services certificate with Educational Interpreter endorsement (or NJ certification eligibility), EIPA 3.5+, and 1–3 years’ educational interpreting

Qualifications

• NJ Educational Services certificate with Educational Interpreter endorsement or eligible for NJ certification.
• EIPA score of 3.5 or more.
• High School diploma is required.
• 1–3 years’ experience in educational interpreting.
• New Jersey residence within one year from date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting/transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Convey thought and intent accurately and impartially between spoken English and ASL.
• Interpret both receptively and expressively.
• Assess communication skills to choose the most appropriate mode of communication.
• Attend classes, advising sessions, labs, and university events to interpret information.
• Observe and refer issues to support staff as needed.
• Use appropriate sign vocabulary for academic or technical topics.
• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information.
• Support special projects such as campus events and meetings with deaf guests.
