Job Summary
The ASL Interpreter’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing communication and interpretation services to LIT’s deaf and hard of hearing students. This position facilitates communication between students, faculty, and staff, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities and participation in campus activities. The ASL Interpreter reports directly to the Communication Access Provider. This position is considered non‑exempt.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Provides accurate and effective interpretation of lectures, discussions, presentations, and tutoring sessions in real‑time for deaf and hard of hearing students
- Interprets for students during classroom sessions, meetings, events, and other academic activities
- Collaborates with faculty and staff to ensure materials are accessible and appropriately formatted for deaf and hard of hearing students
- Maintains confidentiality and professionalism in all interpreting situations
- Offers exceptional customer service in a student‑centered, professional environment at all times
- Upholds and agrees to comply with all federal, state, and local requirements pertaining to the security, confidentiality, and privacy of information maintained by the institution, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Evenings and weekends as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in American Sign Language and knowledge of Deaf culture
- Commitment to providing inclusive and equitable access to education
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in Deaf Education or a similar discipline
- Certification from a recognized interpreting organization (e.g., RID, NIC, BEI)
- Experience working in an academic setting
