Job summary

New Jersey Institute of Technology seeks a Part-Time American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide high-quality interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and visitors during NJIT academic and university-sponsored activities.

The interpreter will facilitate equitable access by accurately interpreting between spoken English and ASL, following RID Code of Professional Conduct. Strong communication and confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

• Must hold NJ Educational Services certificate with Educational Interpreter endorsement or be eligible for NJ certification.
• EI-PA score of 3.5 or more.
• High School diploma required.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting/transliterating services for Deaf and hard of hearing students and other college clientele.
• Convey thought and intent accurately, impartially between ASL and spoken English.
• Interpret receptively and expressively across settings (classrooms, meetings, events).
• Assess communication skills to choose the best communication mode for each individual.
• Attend advising sessions, classes, labs, and campus activities to interpret information.
• Maintain professional and ethical standards and confidentiality in interpreting situations.
