Responsibilities

• Reports unusual situations observed during patrols.
• Reports defective/non-functioning parking meters.
• Submits daily activity summaries of citations.
• Confers with billing/collections on questions or problems.
• Operates radio communications with Police Station; uses citation-reporting equipment.
• Assists with department activities, including events and animal-control enforcement.
• Performs additional related duties as assigned.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The City of Birmingham is seeking a part time Parking Enforcement Assistant (PEA) who will work 24 hours per week under the supervision of the Police Department to perform a variety of duties related to the enforcement of City of Birmingham parking ordinances.

The work schedule averages 24 hrs. per week primarily nights and weekends. Hours will be determined by the police department.

This part-time position starts at $21.88 per hour, with annual increases. The maximum rate is reached after 30 months; while it is currently $29.37 per hour, it will be higher by the time you reach that step due to the yearly adjustments.

The Parking Enforcement Assistant primarily requires outdoor work, with exposure to a variety of weather and environmental conditions, which may be extreme at times.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Regularly patrols assigned geographic areas in vehicle and on foot to check meters and timed parking zones for violations.
2. Investigates complaints received regarding parking violations.
3. Issues parking citations; advises citizens on parking regulations.
4. Provides information and assistance to motorists and pedestrians.
5. Reports any unusual situations or circumstances observed during the course of patrols.
6. Reports defective and non-functioning parking meters.
7. Submits daily activity summaries of parking citations.
8. Confers with billing and collections personnel on questions or problems.
9. Operates 2-way radio for communications with Police Station; utilizes automated equipment for issuing and reporting citations.
10. Assists in a variety of department activities involving the use of civilian personnel; such duties may include special events assignments, including enforcement of animal control violations.
11. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma, or equivalent. Post-secondary coursework in criminal justice, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 1 to 2 years of previous work experience involving substantial public contact.
• Valid Michigan Driver's License with good driving record.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to sit for long periods of time
• Must be able to stand/walk for long periods of time
• Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions
