Job summary

The Department of Education of the City of New York seeks a Parent Coordinator for the High School Of Applied Communication (24Q267) to engage parents, including those with limited English proficiency, in school life and decision making.

You will work with the principal, staff, leadership team, parent associations, and community groups to create a welcoming environment, address concerns, and organize workshops and events that strengthen parental involvement in education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher with 2+ years community work related to duties.
• Alternative: Associate’s degree with 4+ years related community work.
• High school diploma with 6+ years related community work.
• Familiarity with NYC public school system.
• Experience with convening workshops.
• Bilingual in English and another language preferred.
• Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Increases parent involvement by working with school, parent, and community groups.
• Facilitates parent and school community concerns and issues.
• Conducts outreach to engage parents in their children’s education.
• Convenes regular parent meetings and events on key topics.
• Attends parent meetings with the principal when appropriate.
• Works with the parent association to establish by-laws and elections.
• Serves as a liaison to Central and Field-based parent support staff.
• Maintains contact with community organizations providing services to the school’s program.
• Organizes back-to-school and other events to welcome parents.
