Qualifications

Job description

The Emergency Department Paramedic position is an experienced professional role that provides care within the Emergency Department setting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, following the guidelines of the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing and within the scope of practice of a Paramedic in Virginia.

The Paramedic supports clinical care in the department, assisting with direct and indirect patient care activities throughout UVA Emergency Department.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Providing patient/family-centered care that addresses physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs, including rapid evaluation of emergencies and collaboration with the healthcare team to establish treatment goals.

  2. Communicating effectively to promote information sharing across the continuum of care and within the healthcare team.

  3. Participating actively in a professional practice model, including shared governance, adherence to standards, peer review, professional development, leadership, and accountability.

  4. Acting as a patient advocate throughout all care settings and in the community.

  5. Identifying clinical priorities and initiating actions to improve patient outcomes.

  6. Using medications, treatments, and protocols within scope, under orders from a License Independent Practitioner (LIP), as defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia EMS Board.

  7. Documenting medications and treatments in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

  8. Providing and documenting patient re-assessments in the EMR in accordance with hospital policies.

  9. Demonstrating high-level teamwork with other Emergency Department staff.

  10. Supporting evidence-based practice, research, and quality improvement initiatives, and embodying the organization's patient promise.

  11. Monitoring and assisting in the transport of critically ill patients.

  12. Assisting in trauma resuscitation as assigned, including documentation.

  13. Facilitating optimal patient flow and ensuring patient safety and security.

  14. Performing other duties as assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $19.88 - $30.81 Hourly

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • One year of experience as a paramedic or in healthcare.

  • EMT-P licensure in Virginia.

  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.

Physical Demands:

Standing for prolonged periods, frequent travel, bending/stooping; proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills; ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 lbs; exposure to chemicals, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases.
