  • Repairs chips or scrapes on walls, ceilings, and furniture and completes texturing tasks.
  • Applies paint to walls, equipment, buildings, and other surfaces with brushes, rollers and related equipment.
  • Mixes, blends and matches paint to proper color using computer.
  • Maintains records of paint colors for assigned buildings.
  • Operates spray equipment, striping machine, scaffolding, and motorized lifts.
  • Hangs wallpaper and applies decorative finish elements.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Provides limited guidance to less senior technicians.
  • Promotes safety and environmental practices.

Overview

Finishes Technician Apprentice or Journeyman - Painting perform general painting preparation and application techniques to maintain, repair, and finish USU Facilities, as well as assist with floor covering preparation and application as needed. They work as a member of a team under limited supervision on various projects or assignments. This position will be hired at either an Apprentice or Journeyman level based upon qualifications/experience and duties assigned. Please see Qualifications section below.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares surfaces before painting by: removing nails, washing, scraping, sanding, puttying, patching, mudding and taping, etc.
  • Repairs chips or scrapes on walls, ceilings, and furniture and completes texturing tasks.
  • Applies paint to walls, equipment, buildings, and other structural surfaces by using brushes, rollers and related equipment.
  • Mixes, blends and matches paint to proper color and consistency, using computer.
  • Maintains records of paint colors for assigned buildings.
  • Operates equipment such as spray equipment, striping machine, scaffolding, and motorized lifts.
  • Hangs wallpaper and applies other decorative finish elements to walls and other surfaces.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Provides limited technical guidance and direction to less senior technicians.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assists work in the other areas of the Finishes Shop.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

For Apprentice:

  • Apptitude is required.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of building trades.
  • Pass the Weisen Test of Mechanical Aptitude.

For Journeyman:

  • Four years of directly related work experience. Incumbents must possess journeyman skills and/or a license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Knowledge of different types of floor coverings and installation and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.
  • Ability to select and apply paint.
  • Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisors.
