The Painter II is an experienced skilled-trades position responsible for performing and coordinating professional painting, finishing, surface preparation, and related maintenance work throughout City of Norfolk facilities. This position works on a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and uses specialized painting equipment, tools, materials, and techniques to protect City assets and maintain safe, functional, and professional public facilities.
The Painter II performs advanced surface preparation and finishing work including interior and exterior painting, drywall repair and finishing, wood refinishing, masonry and stucco surface repair, staining and sealing, pressure washing, and pavement and parking lot striping. The position evaluates surface conditions, selects appropriate preparation methods and coating systems, estimates material needs, and performs work using brushes, rollers, airless spray equipment, power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and other trade equipment.
As an experienced member of the paint shop, the Painter II also assists with coordinating jobs and projects, provides direction and technical guidance to less-experienced employees, monitors work quality, maintains accurate work-order information, and helps ensure materials, equipment, and work areas are properly maintained. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong painting and finishing skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to work effectively as part of a skilled-trades team serving a diverse portfolio of municipal facilities.
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
