Dartmouth College Campus Services in Hanover, NH is seeking a Painter II to lead small painting projects and perform intermediate to advanced surface preparation and coating applications.

Under minimal supervision or working independently, the Painter II completes quality painting projects requiring attention to appearance, function and durability. Works as a lead member of a crew assigned to small scale and/or routine projects, works independently, or with peers. Prepares surfaces for new coating materials, mixing coating materials according to specifications, applies coating materials to a variety of surfaces where appearance as well as surface protection are important, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the tools and equipment employed in the painter's trade. The Painter II is an intermediate level position with skill and proficiency in the execution of painting duties.

Inspects smaller and routine sites to determine procedure, material, tools and methodology needed. Inspects/audits completed work to confirm that work order requirements and expectations are met. Requests work orders, advises supervisor of materials/services required for repairs. May supervise crew in small scale or routine projects. Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work. Prepares the surfaces for new finish, removing old finishes when necessary. Prepares new work plugging holes, cleaning, final sanding. Repairs surfaces using putty, plaster, joint compound, or other appropriate material.
Selects pre-mixed paints/stains including enamels, glosses specialty paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, & shellacs. Thins, stirs and mixes coating materials according to specific directions and needs. Matches, tints, tones and blends coating materials. Prepares products per manufacturer's instructions. Uses mechanical mixer for volume blending. Applies products using appropriate brushes, rollers, spray, or other appropriate method. Applies products using spray equipment to apply paints in the spray booth. Applies special finish appearances such as simulating wood grain, marble, brick, tile, etc. Meets specifications regarding match, texture, decoration, thickness, and level, on wall surfaces, architectural woodwork, and furniture. Assures the coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
Cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other equipment; safely disposes of used paints and rags. Protects surrounding areas. Uses ladders, scaffold, &/or platform as appropriate in a safe manner.
Learns from Painter III via working with and understanding procedures: For example, receives clear and concise instructions from senior technicians; learns via constructive input from coworkers performing work. While performing maintenance and repair work, learns the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action. Develops skills by observing and assisting peers and Painter III in performing response, problem diagnosis and repair.
Works with and mentors Building Repair Technician I and Painter I on painting projects, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions. When qualified, allows the tech to perform the work under supervision.
Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, aerial lifts. Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing up to 80lbs. Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present. Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries while working on ladders, scaffolds, etc. Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls, gloves, and goggles.
Laboratory settings, Commercial kitchen settings, Mechanical/electric rooms, Ladders/staging, Roofs, Private offices/public spaces, Student residential housing.
