Job description

Position Purpose

On both a scheduled work order basis and in response to emergencies, independently performs maintenance and repair to Dartmouth College academic and administration buildings, structures, and related fixtures and utilities, using a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry.

The Carpenter II displays an advanced level of skill and is able to plan, execute and complete complex carpentry and related projects. Oversees carpentry work of the greatest complexity to ensure high standards are met. The Carpenter II maintains a specified level of skill and proficiency in the execution of duties related to maintenance and repair at Dartmouth College.

Qualifications

Education: High School or equivalency.

  • Four to eight years of relevant experience in carpentry and related trades.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Ability to plan, execute and complete complex carpentry and related projects of a superior quality.
  • Mastery of shop mathematics, able to measure and cut material to specified dimensions, work with angles, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand building plans and sketches, and to create sketches to complete assigned work.
  • Highly skilled in the use of all hand tools, including screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, wrenches, socket wrenches, tape measures, and levels.
  • Highly skilled in the use of all hand and shop (stationary) power tools, including drills, hammer drills, saws, sanders, and planers.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently without supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communication skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and responding to alarms, including potentially hazardous environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Training: Driver Safety – Electrical Safety related work practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one to two years apprenticeship in relevant trade, or trade school, preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Request work orders, advise supervisor of materials/services required for repairs, supervise or assist coworkers in project/repair work; work with trades personnel in other shops; communicate directly and respectfully with building occupants who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work; oversee carpentry work of the greatest complexity ensuring high quality standards are met.
  • Interact with internal trades technicians to perform repairs and renovation, coordinating work scope.
  • Perform specialized and general carpentry work and maintenance, including repairs to shades and blinds, installation of shelving boards, rest‑room accessories, adjustments to doors and door hardware, modular furniture repairs, lab casework repairs, removal and installation, wood and metal framing, trim for doors, windows, floors, walls, ceilings, window repair and installation, fabrication and installation of cabinets, bookcases and built‑in furniture, structural elements; select materials and supplies for assigned work.
  • Fill out fire‑door evaluations.
  • Repair drywall by selectively removing damaged wall and patching; install drywall under instruction; finish drywall to a level 4 as defined by the Gypsum Association (GA‑214); protect surrounding areas.
  • Grout and seal tile; assist Mason with tile repairs; replace and install tile for smaller projects.
  • Apply caulking for sealing purposes.
  • Assist campus Roofer with roof repairs; independently patch membrane roofs; install flashing for membrane and shingle roofs.
  • Maintain tools, including tool sharpening.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to pick up supplies required for the maintenance of properties located throughout Hanover and surrounding area.
Learning and Mentorship
  • Receive clear and concise instructions from senior technicians; learn via constructive input from coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance and repair work, learn the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • Develop skills by observing and assisting peers and senior technicians in performing response, problem diagnosis and repair.
  • Work with and mentor Building Repair Technician I & II and Carpenter I, explaining procedures and reasoning; when qualified, allow the tech to perform work under supervision.
Working Conditions
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, kneeing, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors, in harsh weather, in areas that are dirty, smoky, or where fumes are present, and in underground manholes.
  • Exposed to cuts, bruises, and more serious injuries working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Work involves wearing protective clothing such as aprons or overalls, gloves, goggles, and ear plugs.
