Job summary

UNC Health in Raleigh, NC, offers a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship for rising senior ADN and BSN students to gain hands-on clinical experience. In this role you collaborate with an RN partner on 5 East – Acute Care Oncology to deliver patient‑centered care.

This program strengthens nursing skills, builds confidence, and helps bridge the transition from student to professional nurse in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with expected graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS and BLS certification are required per program.
• Basic computer skills and ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information while providing care and report changes to a nurse.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct and indirect patient care including vital signs, daily living activities, and basic treatments.
• Support nurses and other staff with routine examinations and procedure prep.
• Maintain a clean work area, restock supplies, and assist with patient transport when needed.
• Support teaching provided to patients and document understanding.
