Job summary

UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC, is offering a 10-week Student Nurse Externship Program (May 24, 2027 - July 31, 2027) for rising senior ADN/BSN students. The extern will work under RN supervision in the Operating Room, gaining hands-on clinical experience and developing essential nursing skills.

The role emphasizes patient care, teamwork, and professional socialization within a hospital setting, with duties ranging from vital signs to post-discharge support.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months time from the start of student nurse externship.
• BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to the RN or provider.
• Provides assistance to patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Delivers care/treatments per plan of care, including vitals, wound care, and basic procedures.
• Assists with activities of daily living and mobility as outlined in the plan of care.
• Performs routine indirect care tasks such as preparing the unit, stocking, and keeping instruments clean.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Supports providers with routine exams/procedures and procurement of supplies during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aids patients in orientation, supports behavior modification plans, and helps maintain a therapeutic milieu.
