Job summary

UNC Rex Holly Springs Hospital invites nursing students to join a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program to gain hands-on clinical experience and strengthen nursing skills. The externship supports the transition from student to professional nurse within an integrated UNC Health environment.

Participants will work with an RN partner in the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice, gaining exposure across Med Surg units and patient care activities in a 40-hour work week during May 24–July 31.

Qualifications

• Fluent English required for patient and team communication.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in delivering patient care.
• Basic computer skills for charting and documentation.
• Lift and transfer patients or equipment up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand and walk frequently throughout shifts.
• CPR certification is required or pursued during externship.

Responsibilities

• Observes and documents patient information and reports significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care/treatments as outlined in the plan of care, e.g., vital signs, wound care, glucose checks.
• Performs direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Performs indirect care such as cleaning, restocking, transporting, and basic clerical tasks.
• Reinforces patient teaching and verifies understanding with the patient/family.
• Assists providers with routine examinations and procedure setup as needed.
• Supports patients in psychiatric settings with orientation, behavior plans, and de-escalation when required.
• Participates in milieu activities and supports safety and emotional needs of patients.
