Job summary

DHR Health in McAllen, Texas is seeking a Certified Medical Coder to review clinical documentation and assign ICD-10-CM codes for outpatient encounters, billing, and reporting. You will verify principal diagnoses, comorbidities and procedures in line with AHIMA guidelines.

The role requires ICD-10-CM, CPT and APC knowledge, medical terminology proficiency, and experience with coding software (3M encoder preferred). Regular CE and collaboration with Coding Manager are expected.

Qualifications

• Experience and/or training in medical coding, medical terminology and anatomy and physiology required.
• Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment
• Ability to perform productive research quickly
• Requires working with minimal interruptions
• Must have an understanding of laws and ethics related to health insurance, medical billing and HIPAA
• Computer and coding software experience required, 3M encoder preferred

Responsibilities

• Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others.
• Accurately Codes outpatient procedures according to ICD-10-CM, CPT and APC guidelines
• Code outpatient record types such as EMR, Radiology, Series, RMF Clinics
• Attach HCPCS Level I and II modifiers for billing purposes
• Meet volume requirements of 120-150 accounts coded daily
• Maintain 95% chart coding accuracy
• Research coding references (3M) for final coding
• Validate CPT and procedure descriptions
• Identify medical abbreviations and their meanings
• Multitask effectively and collaborate with departments to obtain information
• Attend CE activities and review coding updates as needed
• Adhere to AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and HIPAA rules
