Job summary

The City of Lansing Public Service Department is seeking a Solid Waste Operator 500 to support daily outdoor operations. You will drive a packer truck, collect refuse and recyclables, and help with maintenance while ensuring safety and efficiency.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of heavy manual labor experience, with a preference for those who can operate a packer truck. This is a full‑time, on‑site role in Lansing, MI.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1 year of experience performing heavy manual labor.
• 1 year of experience operating a packer truck preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operates a motorized vehicle up to 35 feet in length, drive from cab on right side.
• Picks up refuse bags and yard waste, deposits materials in the side of the vehicle.
• Picks up City recycle carts and empties them in the side of the packer.
• Picks up City refuse carts and empties them in the side of the packer.
• May operate a bulk item collection truck and lift/move large items.
• Washes and cleans vehicles daily, inside and out.
• Participates in preventative maintenance for packers and other solid waste vehicles.
• Completes daily logs, trips and inspection sheets.
