Job summary

Colorado Department of Transportation in Calhan, CO is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist. You will operate heavy equipment, plow snow, perform road maintenance, and respond to emergencies on a rotating on-call schedule.

Qualifications include two years of physical labor or heavy equipment operation, a valid CDL Class A or B with no air brake restrictions, and the ability to work outdoors in variable conditions. CDOT offers substantial benefits and overtime opportunities.

Qualifications

• Must have at least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
• If you have a non-Colorado CDL, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire.
• Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include background checks and driving records.
• May be required to pass a controlled substance test.
• On-call work, shift work, and essential services designation are part of the role.
• May be required to live within 30 minutes’ driving time to respond to emergencies.
• New employees take two weeks of maintenance training; veterans receive annual training.

Responsibilities

• Plowing snow and maintaining roadways.
• Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractors.
• Mowing grass, removing debris, and repairing guardrails and signs.
• Filling potholes, setting traffic controls, and applying pavement markings.
• Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs.
• Responding to emergencies and working overtime during weather events.
• Following safety guidance and wearing PPE.
