Job summary

Streetplus is seeking an Outdoor Cleaner Ambassador to join our team in Newark's public parks. This role focuses on keeping landscapes clean, vibrant, and welcoming while performing basic maintenance tasks on site.

You will work directly in Downtown Newark, supporting landscaping, turf care, litter control, and safety checks, with occasional interaction with park visitors and volunteers.

Qualifications

• Experience in gardening, horticulture, or landscape maintenance preferred.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and standard outdoor power equipment.
• Familiarity with basic lawn care practices and sustainable landscaping.

Responsibilities

• Landscape upkeep including soil beds, planting trees, shrubs and flowers.
• Maintain park lawns and pathways with edging, weeding and pruning.
• Perform routine outdoor cleaning, litter removal and debris control.
• Safely operate shovels, pruners, rakes and power tools for maintenance tasks.
• Assist with irrigation tasks and plant care to optimize health.
• Act as a welcoming ambassador and engage with park visitors on occasion.
• Conduct health and safety inspections and report issues promptly.

This unique role is perfect for passionate individuals who thrive on maintaining beautiful landscapes, caring for public parks, and keeping urban green spaces pristine.

Working directly on the ground for Streetplus, you will combine environmental upkeep with specialized landscaping support. Your expertise will help ensure Newark's parks remain beautiful, healthy, and safe, directly elevating the daily experience for residents and visitors alike.

Responsibilities

• Landscape Upkeep: Prepare soil beds and plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and other greenery to establish new park landscapes or enhance existing ones.
• Lawn & Park Maintenance: Maintain Park lawns and pathways through edging, weeding, pruning, and detailed landscape care to ensure a healthy and pristine appearance.
• Property Cleaning: Perform routine outdoor cleaning duties, including litter removal, trash emptying, and keeping park grounds clear of debris.
• Tool Operation: Safely and efficiently operate hand tools (shovels, pruners, rakes) and power tools (trimmers, blowers) to perform maintenance tasks.
• Irrigation & Plant Care: Help manage watering schedules and basic irrigation to optimize plant health and water efficiency.
• Community Engagement: Act as a welcoming ambassador for Streetplus, occasionally interacting with park visitors and assisting with community or volunteer environmental projects.
• Health & Safety Inspections: Conduct regular walkthroughs to identify landscape issues (like pests or weeds) or safety hazards, implementing quick solutions or reporting them immediately.

Experience & Qualifications

• Landscaping Background: Proven experience in gardening, horticulture, or landscape maintenance with a solid understanding of plant care is preferred (but not required).
• Tool Proficiency: Ability to safely use hand tools and standard outdoor power equipment (trimmers, leaf blowers).
• Lawn Care Knowledge: Familiarity with basic lawn care practices, including weed control, fertilization, and sustainable landscaping methods.
• Customer Service Spirit: Strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with the public as a representative of Streetplus.
• Reliability: A strong commitment to maintaining clean, sustainable, and beautiful community public spaces.

Physical Demands

• Strength: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. to waist height.
• Stamina: Ability to work outdoors for hours on your feet in various weather conditions (heat, light rain, cold).
• Dexterity: Comfort safely handling shovels, rakes, pruners, handsaws, and other maintenance equipment.

Preferred Requirements

• Prior professional experience in commercial landscaping or public park maintenance.
• A strong interest in horticulture, urban forestry, landscape design, or environmental issues.
• Background Check: Must be willing to undergo a criminal history background verification, as our ambassadors safely serve public spaces and diverse population.
