Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking an experienced Surgical First Assistant to participate in preparatory steps of surgery, assist the operating team, and maintain a sterile environment. The role includes equipment setup, room preparation, patient positioning, and collaboration with surgeons to ensure safe, efficient procedures.

Qualified candidates have advanced training in Surgical Technology, at least three years of related experience, and strong knowledge of anatomy and aseptic techniques.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge and skill in major operative surgical specialties performed.
• Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and potential complications for procedures performed.
• Demonstrated ability to remove skin staples and wound drains.
• Advanced knowledge and skill of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for various surgical procedures and suturing.
• Demonstrated ability to anticipate and recognize Physician's needs and changes that requires unplanned or unanticipated interventions.
• Remain current with ongoing computer based learning modules as assigned.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Participates in preparatory steps of surgery; assists operating team in gathering supplies and preparing the patient.
• Assists in lifting, transferring, positioning, preparing and draping the patient.
• Ensures sterile field and assists in maintaining aseptic technique during procedures.
• Sets up room and equipment, ensures working condition of devices, and reports issues for repair.
• Trains Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants; supports department and facility work teams.
