Job Summary:
Assist with the provision of patient care within established policies and procedures to serve the needs of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care program. Provides care to a population with predictable ophthalmic needs and assists the providers in caring for more acute needs.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Screen patients for chief complaint, take accurate history of ophthalmic illnesses/surgeries, past ocular history, family history, and current eye-related medications. Perform ophthalmic testing appropriate for the patient, including vision checks, pupillary assessments, corneal curvature, color vision, lensometry, intraocular pressure, visual fields, ocular motility, and other specialized tests. Instill ophthalmic drops as per physician’s instructions and record vitals when indicated.
- Perform and calibrate visual field tests, including automated perimetry and Amsler Grid testing.
- Perform OCT, HRT, biometry readings with IOL master and other A-scan programs.
- Assist doctors during examinations, prepare for and assist in minor surgeries and laser procedures, and provide patient education on preoperative and pre-laser preparations. Apply eye dressings and protective shields as directed.
- Set up and assist with intravitreal injections.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of exam lanes and instruments, keep rooms stocked with necessary supplies, and ensure proper instrument maintenance and repair.
- Provide administrative support, including appointment scheduling, record keeping, and ensuring EMR documentation is current.
- Communicate with patients, other departments, and physicians via telephone, document messages, and handle patient inquiries and complaints appropriately.
- Maintain a clean and sterile environment in patient care areas, prepare rooms for examinations and treatments.
- Participate in continuing education, staff meetings, and adhere to safety, compliance, and confidentiality policies.
