Job Summary:
Assist with patient care within established policies and procedures to serve the needs of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care program. Provide care to a population with predictable ophthalmic needs and assist providers with more acute cases.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Screen patients for chief complaints, take accurate histories of ophthalmic illnesses/surgeries, past ocular history, family history, and current eye-related medications. Perform ophthalmic testing such as checking/documenting distance and near vision, papillary assessment, corneal curvature, color vision testing, lensometry, intraocular pressure checks, confrontation visual fields, ocular motility, and other assessments. Instill ophthalmic drops as directed, and record vitals in the EMR.
- Perform visual field tests including calibration of automated perimeters and Amsler Grid testing.
- Conduct OCT and HRT imaging, and use IOL master and other biometry tools for readings.
- Assist doctors during examinations, prepare for and assist in minor surgeries and laser procedures, and provide patient education. Apply eye dressings and shields as instructed.
- Set up and assist with intravitreal injections.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of exam lanes and instruments, keep rooms stocked, and ensure proper room maintenance.
- Maintain and repair instruments as needed, open and close exam lanes, and support administrative functions such as scheduling and record keeping.
- Perform clerical duties, ensure EMR documentation is complete, and communicate effectively with patients and staff via telephone.
- Maintain a sanitary environment, prepare rooms for patients, and ensure sterile conditions of instruments.
- Participate in continuing education, staff meetings, and complete required compliance and safety modules.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Two years of full-time experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or successful completion of a JCAHPO-accredited program.
- Registered Medical Assistant (Washington) within 2 months of hire.
- Basic Life Support certification within 1 month of hire.
Additional Requirements:
- Attention to detail, multitasking ability, broad ophthalmic knowledge.
- Basic computer skills and accurate keyboarding.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3-5+ years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
- Broad ophthalmic experience, familiarity with electronic medical records (EpicCare), proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Certifications such as COA, COT, or COMT through JCAHPO are preferred.
