Job summary

Riverside Health in Newport News, Virginia is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to support the office under supervision. This non-certified, entry-level role greets patients, documents complaints, records clinical measures, and assists with refills, referrals, and patient education.

You will work with the Office Manager and clinicians to ensure timely care, maintain patient communications, and use EHR and office software.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
• 1 year Ophthalmology/Optometry Office experience (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Performs and records pertinent clinical measures to include Visual Acuities, Refractometry, Application Tonometry, Keratometry, Slit Lamp Exams, Visual Fields, OCT and other ancillary testing under supervision.
• Identifies the patient’s complaint or reason for visit and assesses immediate needs to ensure timely care.
• Records pertinent medical, allergic, ophthalmic and family histories including prescriptions, glasses and contacts.
• Communicates and documents essential information to physicians and team members.
• Prepares referral follow up letters and dictations for physicians to review and sign.
• Facilitates patient education through videos and brochures.
• Prepares prescription refills for physician’s review and signature.
• Reviews and returns patient voicemails and calls to patients and pharmacies in a timely manner.
• Maintains a positive interpersonal approach with patients and families.
• Utilizes technology and EHR systems to increase efficiency.
