The Ophthalmic Assistant, (OA), must be able to effectively perform as part of a team. As this position requires direct patient contact, assistants must maintain compassion towards patients. The OA participates in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to a select group of patients. Assistants refer any problems they encounter with their patients to the attending physician.

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, (COA), must be able to effectively perform as part of a team. As this position requires direct patient contact, assistants must maintain compassion towards patients. The COA participates in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to a select group of patients. Assistants refer any problems they encounter with their patients to the attending physician.

The Certified Ophthalmic Technician, (COT), must be able to effectively perform as part of a team. As this position requires direct patient contact, assistants must maintain compassion towards patients. The COT participates in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to a select group of patients. Assistants refer any problems they encounter with their patients to the attending physician.

The Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist, (COMT), must be able to effectively perform as part of a team. As this position requires direct patient contact, assistants must maintain compassion towards patients. The COMT participates in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to a select group of patients. Assistants refer any problems they encounter with their patients to the attending physician.
Qualifications:

Ophthalmic Assistant:

  • High School diploma/GED plus one (1) year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting, patient care, customer service or related experience.
  • Current BLS certification or must successfully obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Preferred: One (1) year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting or experience in a medical setting.

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant:

  • High School diploma/GED plus one (1) year of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
  • Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
  • Current BLS certification or must successfully obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment.

Certified Ophthalmic Technician:

  • High School diploma/GED plus two (2) years of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
  • Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
  • Current BLS certification or must successfully obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment.

Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist:

  • High School diploma/GED plus three (3) years of ophthalmic/optometric assisting experience required.
  • Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification.
  • Current BLS certification or must successfully obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment.

All Levels:

  • Good communication skills and ability to handle demanding and/or stressful requests.
  • This position revolves around serving the clinical ophthalmic eye exam, procedure and equipment needs.
  • Must understand the urgency of the clinical and physician requests.
  • Staff answers directly to the Clinical Programs Director; takes directions and instructions from the Clinical Supervisor.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Provide direct patient assessment, performing measurement required to evaluate the eye; test and record visual acuity appropriately for patient with all levels of acuity.
  • Data Collection: Collect current data from an in person patient assessment, which includes but is not limited to, uses of ophthalmic medications, performing measurement required to evaluate the eye.
  • Equipment Sustainment: Maintain the responsibility to clean and sterilize all required medical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • All levels may perform additional duties as assigned.
