The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills to address real-world challenges. CAS staff and managers are integral to this work, playing vital roles in supporting academic excellence and advancing the mission of both the College and the University.
CAS is organized into multiple Academic Support Units (ASUs), each housing staff and managers who provide administrative, strategic, and operations support to multiple academic departments in CAS. ASU6 includes the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Computer Science, Data Science, the School of Computer & Data Science, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, and the Multidisciplinary Science Program.
The Operations Coordinator is the primary support position for all operational and logistical processes within the assigned Academic Support Unit (ASU) and assists the Operations Manager in administrative tasks and special projects, developing an in-depth knowledge and expertise to consistently coordinate and administer department operations and special projects in assigned areas.
This position initiates, oversees, and coordinates operational and logistical processes within the assigned ASU related to areas including public-facing events, office operations, employee onboarding, space, records management, communications, awards and scholarships, student employee hiring, equipment, course materials, and supply procurement. In assigned areas, the position is the primary liaison and will provide guidance to ASU staff, students, and faculty related to these operational and logistical areas. This position also assists the Operations Manager and faculty with special projects as needed.
Special projects and regularly assigned work require independent research, analysis, evaluation, and interpretation. The position may initiate and/or propose such projects and studies, or be assigned projects from Department Heads, Directors, or Operations Manager. This position has responsibility for undertaking projects from set-up through completion and has near-exclusive control of many projects.
This position reports directly to the Operations Manager and works on the Academic team within the ASU. The position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload. The person in this position works largely independently and deals with routine and unexpected matters (some of which are confidential), that require independent judgment calls on a daily basis with regard to policy interpretation and/or the type of services to be provided. The person in this position interacts frequently with the units’ faculty and staff, as well as with administrative colleagues throughout the academic and administrative areas of the University. Interactions occur to provide information or request it from others; to explain policies and procedures, to resolve problems in accordance with policies and procedures, and determine exceptions to policies and processes. The person in this position needs to be able to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds in support of an inclusive, welcoming environment.
