Lynker Technologies in College Park, MD seeks a Support Scientist for Operational Wave and Storm Surge Modeling Development to enhance National Weather Service capabilities. Hybrid work model: 2 days at NCWCP College Park and 3 days from home.

The role focuses on physics-based, probabilistic and AI/ML surge and wave frameworks, atmospheric forcing, and web interfaces for rapid data delivery to stakeholders.

Qualifications

• MS in meteorology, physical oceanography, coastal engineering or related field with 5+ years in weather/ocean science.
• Knowledge of spectral wave models (WAVEWATCH III) for real-time apps.
• Experience with operational storm surge models (SLOSH, P-ETSS, P-Surge, SCHISM, ADCIRC).
• Background in ensemble modeling, probabilistic output analysis and real-time model merging.
• Understanding meteorological inputs (NBM) and generating secondary fields.
• Experience with HPC (PBS/Slurm) and MPI/OpenMP.
• Programming in Fortran 90, C/C++, Python; UNIX shell scripting.
• GitHub for code repos; ability to visualize model outputs and web products.
• Ability to work with interagency partners on model integration and operations.

Responsabilités

• Operational Modeling & System Integration: support development, maintenance, and integration of wave and surge models.
• Coastal Processes & Hazard Prediction: advance formulations for coastal hazards and real-time guidance.
• Atmospheric Forcing & Diagnostics: work with NBMs and derive secondary fields from wind data.
• Interagency & Sector Collaboration: collaborate across federal and private sectors to transfer research to ops.
• Model Experimentation & Validation: design experiments using Python-based verification and metrics.
• System Support & Web Interfaces: visualize and disseminate model output via front-end web tools.
