Lynker is seeking a Support Scientist to advance operational wave and storm surge modeling within the National Weather Service (NWS). The role focuses on developing probabilistic and machine-learning surge/wave frameworks, integrating atmospheric forcing, and transitioning capabilities to operations.

You will build intuitive web interfaces to present model outputs for stakeholders. The ideal candidate has 5+ years in weather/ocean science, strong HPC, and experience with real-time models,

Qualifications

• MS or equivalent in meteorology/oceanography or related field; 5+ years in weather forecasting/ocean science.
• Knowledge of spectral wave models (e.g., WAVEWATCH III) for real-time use.
• Experience with operational storm surge models (SLOSH, P-ETSS, P-Surge, SCHISM, ADCIRC).
• Strong background in ensemble modeling, probabilistic output analysis, and real-time model merging/weighting.
• Understanding of meteorological inputs and atmospheric forcing (NBM).
• Experience running numerical models on HPC with PBS/Slurm; MPI/OpenMP parallelism.
• Proficiency in Fortran 90, C/C++, Python; UNIX shell scripting.
• GitHub for code management; ability to visualize and disseminate outputs.

Responsabilités

• Support development, testing, and integration of wave and storm surge modeling within NWS operations.
• Advance coastal hazard prediction methods and real-time model merging/weighting.
• Work with atmospheric forcing datasets (e.g., NBMs) and derive diagnostics.
• Collaborate across agencies to transition research to operations.
• Design and run numerical model experiments with Python-based verification and metrics.
• Maintain web interfaces to visualize pre-operational and operational model outputs.
