Job summary

Lynker seeks a Support Scientist to accelerate operational wave and storm surge modeling for the National Weather Service. Hybrid work is required: 2 days/week at NCWCP College Park, MD, and 3 days remote.

Responsibilities include developing and testing physics-based, probabilistic, and ML surge/wave frameworks, integrating atmospheric forcing, and building web interfaces for model output. Ideal candidate has MS in a related field and 5+ years in weather/ocean science, with experience in HPC,

Qualifications

  • MS in meteorology, physical oceanography, coastal engineering, or related field, with 5+ years in weather forecasting, physical oceanography, or coastal ocean science.
  • Knowledge of spectral wave models (like WAVEWATCH III), particularly for real-time applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with operational storm surge models (e.g., SLOSH, P-ETSS, P-Surge, SCHISM, and/or ADCIRC)
  • Strong background in ensemble modeling, probabilistic output analysis, and real-time model merging and weighting techniques.
  • Understanding of meteorological inputs and atmospheric forcing (e.g., NBM), with experience generating secondary fields (e.g., synthetic pressure fields from wind fields).
  • Experience running numerical models on HPC platforms using PBS and Slurm for job submissions, and MPI or OpenMP for multi-processing.
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as Fortran 90, C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using GitHub to manage software repositories, code versions, and projects.
  • Ability to maintain, visualize, and disseminate marine modeling output and web-based products.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Modeling & System Integration: Develop, optimize, maintain, and integrate wave and storm surge modeling capabilities.
  • Coastal Processes & Hazard Prediction: Advance numerical, statistical, and probabilistic formulations for coastal phenomena.
  • Atmospheric Forcing & Diagnostics: Work with meteorological input datasets (e.g., NB M) and derive key diagnostics.
  • Interagency & Sector Collaboration: Partner across federal/private sectors to evaluate external models and transition to operations.
  • Model Experimentation & Validation: Design/execute numerical model experiments using Python-based verification and data-fusion.
