General Function

The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions according to Y policies and safety rules, while creating a safe and positive atmosphere to promote YMCA member safety and engagement.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
  • High school education or equivalent (over 16+ years of age)
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience
  • Preferred: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (training provided if needed)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen certifications
Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Availability to open the pool at 6:30 AM on weekdays
  • Monitor the pool area actively using the “effective 10/20 scanning strategy” and ensure staff compliance
  • Respond to emergencies following YMCA and American Red Cross protocols
  • Perform and document equipment and chemical checks
  • Attend staff meetings, training, certification courses, and in-service sessions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
Abilities & Skills
  • Ability to detect distress signals in water and across the zone of responsibility
  • Physical ability to meet strength and lifting requirements
