Job summary

AMD is seeking highly motivated Thermal Engineering interns/co-ops to join our teams at the AI ecosystem hub in Austin, TX, supporting the development of advanced cooling technologies for AI, high-performance computing, and data center platforms.

This onsite, full-time role runs for the Spring/Summer and Summer/Fall terms, with opportunities to contribute to thermal characterization, testing, data acquisition, scripting, and engineering analysis, while learning from experts and building

Qualifications

Enrollment in a U.S.-based university pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Thermal Sciences, or a related engineering discipline.
Knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermal-fluid systems, or engineering analysis.
Thermal management concepts, liquid cooling technologies, coolers, heat exchangers, and airflow management.
Laboratory testing, instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition, and experimental validation methodologies.
CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo.
CFD software or thermal simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, Fluent, FloTHERM, COMSOL, OpenFOAM).
Analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
Exposure to AI infrastructure, HPC systems, server technologies, data center platforms, or energy-efficient cooling is a plus.

Responsibilities

Support thermal and hydraulic characterization of cooling solutions including cold plates, manifolds, heat exchangers, and rack-level systems.
Evaluate air-cooled and liquid-cooled platforms through thermal, airflow, coolant-flow, and pressure-drop analyses.
Assist in laboratory testing, instrumentation setup, data acquisition, and thermal validation activities.
Develop scripts/tools to automate test execution, data processing, and reporting.
Contribute to thermal modeling, simulation, and comparing measured data to design expectations.
Investigate thermal, flow, and power-related issues and propose solutions with engineering teams.
Document findings and communicate results via engineering reports and presentations.
