Job summary

Shenandoah Oncology is seeking a Patient Financial Counselor to help patients navigate insurance benefits, financial responsibilities, and available assistance resources. This onsite role supports the care team and focuses on compassionate, accurate billing communication.

The ideal candidate has strong communication, attention to detail, empathy, and at least three years of medical office experience with insurance procedures. A high school diploma is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum three years of medical business office experience with insurance procedures and patient interaction.
• Preferred: Prior experience in a Patient Financial Counselor role.

Responsibilities

• Ensures insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is entered accurately.
• Performs insurance verification and obtains pre-authorization for services.
• Re-verifies benefits and secures authorization/referral after treatment plan discussion.
• Uses the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability form and obtains approvals as required.
• Conducts financial counseling on patient obligations and payment arrangements.
• Documents counseling and forwards to Billing Office.
• Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance and outside resources.
• Collects co-pays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket amounts at visit.
• Maintains manuals, logs, and necessary documentation.
• Protects patient confidentiality and adheres to policies; supports front office functions.
