Job summary

University of West Los Angeles seeks an Academic Advisor to provide accurate, student-centered guidance to prospective and enrolled students. This on-site role requires regular campus presence for meetings, advising, and collaboration with faculty and staff to support advising, registration, retention, and student success.

You will develop projected schedules, evaluate transcripts, monitor progress in the SIS, and maintain complete records while upholding FERPA standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; master’s degree preferred.
• 1–3 years of experience in academic advising or related higher-education roles.
• Ability to interpret transcripts, curriculums, and degree-completion standards.
• Experience with a student information system (SIS) and maintaining confidential records.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and customer-service skills.
• On-site work multiple days per week; ability to work evenings/weekends as needed.
• Knowledge of FERPA and safeguarding student information.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an on-site presence multiple days per week, with in-person advising and registration support.
• Meet individually or in groups with students to discuss goals, program requirements, and graduation planning.
• Create projected academic schedules and plans with sequencing and completion dates.
• Review transcripts and provide transfer-credit analyses or recommendations.
• Communicate evaluation findings to Registrar, Admissions, program chairs, and faculty.
• Enter and maintain accurate student records in the SIS and related databases.
• Monitor progress toward degree completion and identify at-risk students.
• Assist with registration, schedule changes, leaves of absence, and graduation applications.
• Explain academic policies and graduation requirements.
• Collaborate with Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid and other departments.
