Job summary

Union College in Schenectady, NY is seeking a security officer for overnight patrols to promote a safe environment for students, staff and visitors. The role involves responding to emergencies, enforcing campus policies, and coordinating with local law enforcement as needed.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, NYS driver’s license, and active NYS Security Guard registration, with a 40-hour work week on site. Weekend shifts and evenings are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of related experience.
  • Associate’s degree may substitute for work experience.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license is required.
  • Current NYS Security Guard registration/certification required.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., walk and stand for extended periods, and climb stairs.

Responsibilities

  • Safety and Security Patrol: patrol campus on foot or vehicle, monitor access and direct traffic as needed.
  • Emergency Response: respond to calls, provide first aid and coordinate with responders.
  • Crime Prevention: monitor access points and address trespassing, vandalism, theft.
  • Investigations: collect evidence, interview witnesses, file reports.
  • Safety Training and Awareness: participate in safety and shooter-preparedness programs.
  • Communication: coordinate with Campus Safety, staff, and local law enforcement.

Position Purpose

Patrols buildings and grounds, responds toemergencies and performs related duties designed to promote andensure a safe and secure environment for all campus and communitymembers.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Safety and Security Patrol: Patrols campus premises onfoot or vehicle to ensure the safety and security of students,faculty, staff, and visitors. Identifies and responds to potentialsecurity threats, suspicious activities, and safety hazards.Monitors access to campus buildings and facilities and ensures thatonly authorized individuals enter restricted areas. Directs trafficduring peak hours, special events, or emergencies, ensuring smoothflow and pedestrian safety.
  • Emergency Response: Responds promptly to emergencycalls, provides first aid or assistance as needed, and coordinateswith other emergency responders when required.
  • Crime Prevention: Monitors access points, enforcescampus policies, and addresses violations like trespassing,vandalism, and theft. Conducts security checks on buildings andfacilities.
  • Investigations: Collects evidence, interviews witnesses,and files detailed reports for further action by campus authoritiesor law enforcement if necessary.
  • Safety Training and Awareness: Attends safety workshops,training sessions, and awareness programs related to personalsafety, fire safety, and active shooter preparedness.
  • Communication: Maintains clear and constantcommunication with other Campus Safety members, campus staff, andlocal law enforcement to coordinate responses to incidentseffectively.
Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a related field of study may besubstituted for work experience.
  • Valid NYS driver's license.
  • Current New York State Security Guard registrationcertification required.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., walk and stand for extended periods,and climbing of stairs.

Compensation

The rate for this position is $18.66 per hour.

Except forroles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalistselected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors,including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications,experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Thestated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith andreasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
