Job description

I have a direct hire opening for an Ocean Import/Export Supervisor in Hayward, CA, with a freight forwarding company that provides ocean freight logistics services to businesses importing and exporting products internationally.

• In this role, you will supervise the staff in the Ocean Import/Export Department and oversee daily import/export operations, including customs clearance, shipping documentation, cargo movement, customer service, and regulatory compliance.
• The team coordinates shipments from start to finish by working with customers, overseas offices, ocean carriers, customs brokers, warehouses, and trucking companies to arrange transportation, track shipments, coordinate cargo release and delivery, and complete billing.

Pay and Schedule Information:

• Salary Range: $70,304–$90,000/year
• Day Shift: 8 am-4:30 pm; Monday–Friday (they also are flexible with employees starting at 9 am)

Job Duties of the Ocean Import/Export Supervisor:

• Work alongside the Ocean Import/Export team to ensure shipments are processed accurately and on time.
• Assign work, review shipment volume and staffing needs, and support the team by helping process shipments as needed.
• Oversee shipping documentation, customs clearance coordination, cargo movement, customer communication, and billing accuracy.
• Resolve shipment delays, customs issues, missing documents, claims, and customer complaints.
• Work with customers, overseas offices, carriers, warehouses, truckers, and brokers to confirm shipment requirements and resolve transportation issues.
• Manage escalations involving customers, carriers, vendors, customs issues, service failures, delays, claims, or operational exceptions.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs regulations, FMC requirements, DOT regulations, TSA requirements, and other applicable transportation and trade compliance standards.
• Review and approve operational procedures, SOPs, and workflow processes to ensure consistency and efficiency.
• Monitor key performance indicators including shipment accuracy, billing accuracy, cargo release timing, productivity, and customer service metrics
• Review shipment accuracy, billing accuracy, cargo release timing, employee productivity, and customer service results.
• Help establish shipping procedures for new customer accounts and address concerns with existing accounts.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, operational reports, and departmental planning.

Job Requirements of the Ocean Import/Export Supervisor:

• At least 5 years of ocean freight forwarding experience in either import or export operations.
• At least 2 years of team leadership, supervisory, or equivalent leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of ocean import or export procedures, shipping documentation, Incoterms, and FMC requirements.
• Experience training employees and overseeing daily shipment processing.
• Ability to independently resolve shipment problems and customer escalations.
• Experience working with ocean carriers, transportation vendors, customs brokers, and overseas offices.
• Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience with both ocean imports and exports is preferred but not required.
