Job summary

UNC Health’s Women’s Specialty Unit seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to join the patient care team under the supervision of an RN partner. This temporary externship runs May 24 through July 31, 2027, offering hands-on exposure to prelicensure nursing activities in a 14-bed unit within the Basnight Cancer Hospital.

The role supports nursing education, aids in care delivery, and emphasizes safety, charting, and teamwork with registered nurses to strengthen clinical skills for a future RN career.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina DHHS and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• No prior professional experience required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and ADLs.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Performs indirect care tasks: cleaning, stocking, sterilizing, transport, and clerical duties.
• Reinforces patient education and supports learning under RN supervision.
• Assists providers with routine exams/procedures and with equipment during emergencies.
• Supports behavioral health patients in psychiatric settings and helps maintain a therapeutic milieu.
