Job summary

HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to join our growing Power Delivery team. The role focuses on substation design across multiple locations, including Portland, with an emphasis on one-line diagrams, grounding, and protection and control systems.

You will collaborate with Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission teams, manage scopes and budgets, and mentor junior staff while advancing high-impact electrical projects in a collaborative employee-owned culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and PE license are required.
• 4+ years of experience in substation design with knowledge of one-line diagrams, groundings, and relay/control systems.
• Proficiency in MS Office and electrical design software (PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).
• Experience with 12kV–500kV substations; 765kV a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support scopes, schedules, and budgets and ensure milestones are met.
• Understand substation yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, and control building arrangements.
• Understand protection and control design including panels, one lines, and wiring diagrams.
• Prepare studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, load studies).
• Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and testing.
• Coordinate design activities with Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission teams.
• Communicate with managers, clients, and others; mentor junior staff.
