Job summary

Houston Eye Associates is seeking a floating ophthalmic assistant to support multiple Houston-area locations including Gramercy, Tanglewood and Memorial City. The role involves prelim testing, patient history, and preparing patients for ophthalmologist examinations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED; BLS preferred.
  • BLS certification required or obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Uncertified ophthalmic assistants must obtain JCAHPO COA/COT/COMT within 1 year.
  • 1–2 years’ experience with ophthalmology; bilingual Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Stock, prepare, and clean exam rooms during clinic.
  • Review patient charts for accuracy before exams.
  • Prepare patients for physician examinations.
  • Perform tests as directed by physicians and patient needs.
  • Assist with in-office procedures and consent forms.
  • Administer prescribed medications under physician direction.
  • Document exam information into the EHR as a scribe.
  • Order diagnostic tests and process refills per physician approval.
  • Assist with patient letters and referrals; follow-up on tests.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.

Position Summary

Contributes to the organization by floating to multiple locations as needed, working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advance, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA floater generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Properly stock, prepare, and maintain the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
  • Review patient chart for accuracy of information.
  • Prepare patients for physician’s exam.
  • Perform tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physician’s preference.
  • Assist with in‑office procedures.
  • Prepare and ensure all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in‑office procedures. Clean room after procedure.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Act as a scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into the electronic record. Order diagnostic tests electronically and submit prescription refills approved by physician.
  • Assist with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
  • Assist with diagnostic testing; follow‑up on diagnostic tests when directed by physician.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
  • Assist in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Meet and adhere to HEAs policies and procedures, uphold ethical principles and patient confidentiality, and comply with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Float between HEA locations to support staffing needs of multiple locations and/or departments; work location and/or department may be assigned at short notice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.

Qualifications

  • Certifications & Licenses: Basic Life Support (BLS). If not BLS certified at time of employment, must be obtained within 6 months. Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO (COA, COT, or COMT) certification within 1 year.
  • Experience: Minimum 1‑2 years’ experience working with ophthalmologist. Bilingual Spanish a plus.
