Job summary

Houston Eye Associates is seeking a dedicated Ophthalmic Assistant to support ophthalmologists by performing preliminary tests, preparing patients, and maintaining exam rooms. You will assist with in-office procedures, record keeping, and basic refractions.

Responsibilities include preparing charts, assisting with diagnostic testing, and coordinating appointments. Prior ophthalmic experience and JCAHPO/BLS certification are preferred. This position emphasizes patient confidentiality and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Certifications: JCAHPO COA, COT or COMT; Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Experience: 1-2 years' experience working with ophthalmologist.

Responsibilities

  • Stocking, preparing, and cleaning exam rooms.
  • Reviewing patient charts for accuracy.
  • Prepare patients for physician exams and perform tests as directed.
  • Assist with in-office procedures and prepare consent forms.
  • Administer topical/oral medications under physician direction.
  • May scribe and enter exam information into EHR.
  • Assist with diagnostic testing and follow-up on results.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
  • Train other ophthalmic assistants as needed.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Contributes to the organization by working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advance, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for properly stocking, preparing, and maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
  • Reviews patient chart for accuracy of information.
  • Prepare patients for physicians exam. Perform tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physicians preference.
  • Assists with in-office procedures.
  • Prepare and ensure all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in-office procedures. Prepares and cleans room after procedure.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • May act as scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into electronic record. Order diagnostic tests electronically and submit prescription refills approved by physician.
  • Assists with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
  • Assists with diagnostic testing.
  • Follow-up on diagnostic tests when directed by physician.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
  • Assists in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Must meet and adhere to HEAs policies and procedures, uphold to the highest ethical principles and patient confidentiality. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.

  • Retinoscopy and Refinement (at the COT and COMT level)
