Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Nights and Weekends General Mechanic to join its Campus Maintenance team. The role covers electrical, plumbing, and HVAC tasks and requires reading blueprints, performing preventive maintenance, and assisting a variety of trades on campus.

Candidates should have a High School Diploma or GED and at least two years of related experience; knowledge of fire alarms and generators is preferred. The position is onsite with a nights/weekends schedule.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with 2 years of related experience.
• Basic knowledge of fire alarms and generators preferred.
• Ability to read blueprints, floor plans and schedules.
• Ability to work nights and weekends, including on call.
• Ability to operate and use hand and power tools safely.

Responsibilities

• Reads blueprints, floor plans and schedules related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and equipment.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment, plumbing systems and fixtures.
• Assists other maintenance staff (electricians, HVAC, plumbers, carpenters, masons, painters, sheet metal workers).
• Responds to service requests from building occupants, including emergencies.
• Troubleshoots and repairs electrical systems (lighting, outlets, switches, motors, basic controls).
• Performs other duties as assigned.
