Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Facilities is seeking a Nights and Weekends General Mechanic to join the Campus Maintenance team. This role involves hands-on work across electrical, plumbing, and HVAC tasks, with emphasis on reliability and safety.

You will read blueprints, perform routine and preventive maintenance, and respond to service requests from building occupants, including emergencies. The schedule includes nights and weekends with on-call responsibilities.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with two years of related maintenance experience.
• Basic knowledge of fire alarms and generators.
• Reads, understands and interprets blueprints, floor plans, schedules and manufacturers’ operating specifications.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics.
• Ability to follow and complete work orders and preventive maintenance duties.

Responsibilities

• Reads, understands and interprets blueprints, floor plans, schedules and manufacturer’s operating and/or maintenance specifications related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and equipment.
• Performs minor, routine and preventive maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment, plumbing systems and fixtures, and building structures and furnishings.
• Assists other maintenance personnel such as Electricians, HVAC mechanics, plumbers, carpenters, masons, painters, sheet metal workers, etc.
• Responds to emergency and routine service requests from building occupants.
• Troubleshoots and repairs electrical systems including lighting, outlets, switches, motors, and basic control components.
• Performs other duties assigned.
