Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Surgical Technologist II to assist with surgical procedures under the direction of Staff Nurses. You will prepare, operate, and maintain routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies and implants for the operating room.

The position includes responsibilities as a preceptor for students and new staff, collaboration on perioperative initiatives, and ensuring aseptic technique throughout procedures.

Qualifications

• Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT).
• Two years of Surgical Technologist experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
• Serves as primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns or new staff.
• Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
• Understands the principles of medical and surgical asepsis; communicates breaks in aseptic technique.
• Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants.
• Organizes and reviews instrument trays and supply shelves; maintains specialty equipment.
• Facilitates patient care with regard to patient condition and age; collaborates with peers on decisions related to surgical care.
• Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned; maintains daily unit documentation.
