Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) to support nursing units under the RN direction. The role includes providing basic patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, hygiene, nutrition, specimen collection, vital signs, and safe equipment use.

The position requires a High School Diploma or GED, optional CENA certification or enrollment in health science programs, and current BLS/CPR.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must meet one of the following requirements: Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals course/clincal rotation preferred, or equivalent experience (e.g., Medical Assistant, EMT, LPN).
• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality is preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living and patient comfort.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Provide postmortem care assistance.
• Assist with nutrition and feeding; measure intake.
• Record input/output and manage drains as directed.
• Collect specimens and perform basic lab tests; use glucometer for glucose checks.
• Record vital signs and weights accurately.
• Use and maintain patient care equipment safely.
• Follow infection control practices and standard precautions.
• Document care as directed by the RN.
• Communicate observations to the RN and maintain patient confidentiality.
