Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support nursing staff by providing basic nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role includes assisting with activities of daily living, hygiene, nutrition, and basic treatments.

The ideal candidate holds a CENA certification or is enrolled in a health science program with nursing fundamentals, and has BLS/CPR certification along with knowledge of medical terminology and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals course/clinical rotation preferred.
• Equivalent experience (e.g., Medical Assistant, Paramedic, EMT, Nurse Tech) considered.
• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) required.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort, including bed-making, turning, and transfers.
• Assist with hygiene, nutrition, and elimination needs; monitor intake and output.
• Collect specimens (sputum, urine, stool) and use glucometer for blood glucose testing as directed.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight; assist with weighing patients and equipment use.
• Document care as directed by the RN and communicate observations to the RN.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the RN to support unit efficiency.
