Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care – North Liberty Campus is seeking a Medical Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the clinical laboratory unit, ensuring accurate tests and timely reporting across a state-of-the-art facility.

The role provides leadership for laboratory and phlebotomy staff, oversees high complexity testing, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. A Bachelor's in clinical lab science plus MLS/MLT certification and 1–3 years of related experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited college/university, or equivalent.
• 1–3 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five years.
• 1–3 years of experience with high complexity testing.
• Certification as MLS, MLT or ASCP specialist in the relevant discipline.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in computer software applications.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities in team projects or staff supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory analyses on clinical specimens and supervise the unit.
• Serve as technical expert for test result interpretation and procedures.
• Communicate policy or procedure changes to shift personnel.
• Plan and direct work activities to ensure smooth operation.
• Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff; provide leadership for the lab.
• Review and implement SOPs; participate in quality assurance activities.
• Monitor instrument performance and coordinate maintenance/service as needed.
• Supervise staff, conduct appraisals and disciplinary actions as required.
• Ensure regulatory and accreditation compliance; support training programs.
• Collaborate with UI Health Care departments, vendors, and external professionals.
• Participate in inventory and supply management.
