Job summary

Scripps Health in La Jolla is hiring a Patient Service Specialist - ED for the Access Services department on a full-time night shift schedule (72 hours per pay period; includes weekends and holidays). This frontline role supports registration, insurance verification, billing inquiries, and patient flow.

You will interact with patients, payers, and providers, verify demographics, coordinate appointments, collect payments, and assist clinical staff.

Responsibilities

• Interacting with patients, payers, and providers to gather information for accurate registration including assigning Medical Record Number, referral/authorization, point of service payment collection, document collection and arrival/check-in functions.
• Receiving and routing messages in the department and handling customer billing and payment inquiries as needed.
• Managing patient check-in and check-out from start to finish: ID verification, updating demographics/insurance, providing forms, verifying coverage and benefits, collecting patient responsibility, and preparing end-of-day reporting or reconciliation.
• Assisting patients with eligibility, discussing payment arrangements including financial assistance and price estimates.
• Scheduling and re-scheduling patient appointments with accurate documentation, insurance initiation of authorizations and referrals, and routing of messages.
• Coordinating scheduling, meetings, travel planning if needed; gathering reports/statistics for the department.
• Maintaining a proactive patient-service approach and escalating concerns to leadership when necessary.
• Supporting clinical care staff as a member of the patient care team.
