Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals is seeking a Nurse Aide to support licensed professionals in direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will assist with activities of daily living, prepare exam rooms, and transport patients for tests and procedures.

This role emphasizes patient comfort, safety, and family-centered communication, with responsibilities including basic phlebotomy, vital signs, routine testing, and ensuring a clean, safe care environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification in Basic Life Support or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire.
• Prior patient care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists in direct patient care by providing basic physical care under the RN.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living including bed making.
• Transports patients per Safe Patient Handling policy and escorts for discharge.
• Transports specimens and items within the facility.
• Performs glucose monitoring, urine/stool testing and logs quality control (as policy).
• Performs routine phlebotomy services (excluding line draws).
• Records vital signs and intake/output as directed.
• Provides respiratory support and uses oxygen equipment as needed.
• Encourages use of Incentive Spirometer.
• Notifies RN of any changes in patient condition.
• Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
• Assists physicians and RNs with examinations and procedures.
• Assists with basic rehab activities (ROM, ambulation).
• Communicates nutrition issues to RN.
• Provides total care within scope when assigned sitter.
• Maintains clean, safe environment to prevent infections.
• Keeps unit equipment clean; reports repairs promptly.
• Assists in routine unit operations and communications.
• Answers telephone and messages promptly.
• Transmits accurate messages to appropriate staff.
