The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retailer compensation.

In fiscal year 2022-23, the California Lottery generated sales of approximately $9.2 billion with over $2.2 billion earned for California public schools. Lottery products are sold at more than 23,000 retail locations throughout the state. Product offerings include an average of 52 fun and entertaining Scratchers games and several draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus and daily games such as Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot.

Job Description and Duties:

Under direction of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD), Network Engineering & Administration Information Technology (IT) Supervisor ll, the Network Technician provides technical support, consulting, and is fluent in activities related to voice, data, and video communications within the California State Lottery (Lottery). The incumbent will provide maintenance and support for installed network hardware and software; conduct analysis and recommend a resolution of network failures and software problems; monitor network facilities and report usage; monitor network performance and report activities; provide input for allocation of network resources, maintain and document non-vendor support and utility programs; maintain processes and procedures to assure network integrity and security, and evaluate the performance of the network systems. The duties for this position are focused in the Systems Engineering domain; however, work may be assigned in other domains as needed.

This position is headquartered at the Sacramento HQ and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. Employees must be able to report to their assigned headquarters office as assigned. Travel expense to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee. Eligibility for telework requires the employee to reside in California per California Government Code Section 14200 which states: “telecommuting means the partial or total substitution of computers or telecommunication technologies, or both, for the commute to work by employees residing in California.

New to State candidates are hired at the minimum salary of the classification.

Working Conditions:

The Network Technician will work in a fast-paced environment, with competing priorities, and critical deliverables.

a. Schedule: This position supports the Lottery during normal business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekends, long and/or irregular hours, after-hours work, and holiday work may be required.

b. Travel: Statewide overnight travel may be required.

c. Other: This position may be required to carry a Lottery issued cell phone. This position may be required to be reachable outside of normal business hours.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of different types of network communication including WAN and LAN.
  • Experience performing network installation, configuration, troubleshooting, monitoring and responding to network hardware and connectivity issues. This includes experience completing these tasks as appropriate, through command line
  • Experience configuring and implementing network equipment from pre-defined policies and procedures based around the company's best business and security practices.
  • Ability to document processes and procedures.
  • Experience implementing and troubleshooting wireless technologies and standards.
  • Experience in troubleshooting firewall policies.
  • Knowledge of different ethernet and fiber cables.
  • Ability to maintain a problem-solving attitude while dealing with a range of demanding conditions and strict deadlines.
  • Experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
