Job summary

City of Wichita is seeking a Neighborhood Inspector to enforce residential nuisance, zoning and minimum housing codes. This role blends field work with in-office tasks, requiring attention to detail, tact in communication, and strong organizational skills.

The position operates Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, with wage range $22.72–$34.42 hourly, depending on class specification and tenure. Starting pay is determined upon hire, and employment includes a benefits package.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• One year of public contact experience with difficult individuals
• One year of documenting findings with narratives
• Able to manage multiple projects with strong organizational skills
• Pass Housing Code Enforcement Test within 6 months and Zoning Level 1 within 1 year
• Must have valid Kansas driver’s license and be legally authorized to work in the United States

Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings and premises for compliance with minimum housing and related codes.
• Document nuisance complaints with photos, narratives, and court reports.
• Verify illegal dumping complaints and prepare work orders.
• Inspect mobile homes for code compliance.
• Prepare court reports and abatement documentation.
• Follow up inspections to secure code compliance.
• Answer inquiries by phone, in person, or via email.
• Write violation notices and citations as required.
• Assist and supervise lower-level inspectors.
